Understanding Domain Name System (DNS)
Everything that connects to the internet has a unique address, called an Internet Protocol (IP) address. This consists of mobile phones, websites, laptops, tablets, etc.. The IP address consists of numbers separated by dots, e.g., 196.250.47.51, as a unique identifier.
Computers speak to each other over the Internet, by using the numeric value, e.g., 196.250.47.51 as the identifier, whilst human beings find it far easier to remember the alternative domain name (e.g., www.cybersmart.co.za).
These numbers are then synchronised with unique user-defined names, via appointed authoritative Registries. These registries ensure that the regulations are adhered to globally. ZACR / UniForum (South Africa) is responsible for 2nd Level Domains, i.e., .co.za.
Lexsynergy is the Registry that authorises .com, .net, .africa, .capetown, .joburg, .durban, etc TLDs.
